Dr. Randy Smart is a fourth-generation physician raised in Calaveras County – from great-grandfather on down. “My grandfather was an internist specializing in tuberculosis,” he shared. “He moved our family to Calaveras in 1926 and started the Bret Harte Sanitorium in Murphys. It’s an interesting story – it was determined that TB patients needed less oxygen and that the 2,000- foot elevation was best. So, sanitoriums were moved to that elevation across the country. My grandfather is my hero.” . . .
